Rental Car Insurance vs. Rental Car Reimbursement

What is the difference between rental car insurance and rental car reimbursement?

Rental Car Insurance

Let’s say you are choosing to rent a car for a road trip; rental car insurance typically protects you against claims while you’re renting the vehicle. In most cases, your auto insurance will extend to whatever rental vehicle you get. Before you rent a car you will want to make sure to verify with your Cambridge Insurance agent that your auto insurance extends to rental vehicles. Most rental car services provide coverage, but you will pay a higher rate – so it’s always better to have an auto policy that will extend to rental cars.

Rental Car Reimbursement

Rental car reimbursement only applies when your car is receiving repairs for a covered loss – which means if your car breaks down and your policy does not cover the repair you cannot use the reimbursement. There are daily rental amount limits you can choose and most insurance carriers require a cap. Since your daily reimbursement rate is something you can adjust, you will want to consult with your Cambridge agent on which amount is the best for you.

Keep in mind, rental car reimbursement is a great thing to have, but it’s not required. So make sure to ask for quotes with it so you can see what it will cost you; most of the time the cost to add rental reimbursement is minimal and easily adds value to your policy.
